Hi, I am Neka Holmes, founder of Experience Nek's (formerly Nek's Sweets).
Originally from a small community in Louisiana, I moved to Georgia in 2011.
Cooking and baking have always been part of my family’s foundation. My maternal grandmother was an incredible cook, and my mom and aunts carried that torch. Though my mom passed in 2020, her love for food and family lives on in everything I make. I was raised knowing the value of a home cooked meal and a freshly baked cake.
The kitchen has always been the heart of every home, and it's also mine.
My Southern dessert menu is not a random selection! Each dessert is inspired by my Grandmother, Mom, Aunts, and family, made with quality ingredients, and prepared with lots of love, rooted in memories of the women who shaped me.
I used to share little snippets of those memories on social media. Now, I’ll be sharing them here through Flavors & Footnotes.
Pecan Pralines, Banana Pudding, Pound Cake, German Chocolate Cake, Red Velvet Cake, and more all come with a story.
Stay tuned. I'll tell you all about it.
Do you have a favorite dessert story?

I am 70 years old and I remember my grandmother making me these cakes , like pancakes in a cast iron skillet and they were like pancakes and then she will whip up icing in a bowl pouring on that and it was so delicious. I don’t even know what they were called ! However, until this day I can remember smelling vanilla and they were delicious!
